Re: Standalone executables (was Origin of IDL)
I asked RSI's german representative a long time ago and he answered that
it was so expensive and he was not willing to send a bid to a federal
lab institute. In addition he told me that you have to receive a new
license for every new application or upgraded version. So if you upgrade
your program twice a year you will be paying $500K per year according to
David's guess. But thanks to EXECUTE function you could basically run all
IDL functionality from the worldwide licensed executable. David, you might
pay $50K to RSI, attach "FReeIDL" to your book, double the price, and
.....

PS: Seriously, I hope RSI will come up with a solution. It would be great
if small IDL programs could be given to colleagues who are not using IDL.
