Try the udunits package - where to find? I think it comes with netcdf
(www.ucar.edu/...). And if I remember correctly, someone even wrote an
IDL interface for it. Alternatively, you can take a look at my convert
program at
http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/~schultz.martin/idl/html/src/martin_schultz/convert_unit.pro
