GOES8 5 channel files in IDL

I'm trying to read GOES8 AREAnnnn files in idl. I've looked at :

; PURPOSE:
;       FUNCTION READ_McHEAD will read the PC McIDAS formated image files
;       developed at CIRA.

and

READ_McDATA

but think these will fail on 5 channel GOES8 files. Has anyone got anything more upto date?
